a dwindling natural resource.

For the past year, local government units (LGUs) here in the Philippines have been banning the use of plastic in their respective municipalities. So far, at least 27 cities have banned the use of plastic, with Muntinlupa City leading the way. The main reason for banning plastic is because it is thought of as the major culprit in blocking the drainage system. Hence, flooding is imminent whenever there is rainfall. To find out which cities are implementing the ban, please visitList of Cities in Metro Manila Where Plastic Ban is Implemented.

This hub discusses which kinds of plastics are banned, the solutions offered by the LGUs, the paper versus plastic bag debate, and some more practical solutions to the problem.

LGUs intend to fully implement this ban by 2013. Their objective is to zero out the inventory of non-biodegradable materials in certain establishments by the end of 2012.

Because LGUs are the ones implementing this ban, people belonging to different municipalities are confused as to what is actually allowed or not. In some cities, just being seen carrying a plastic bag around can cause you to be fined by the local officials, even if you dont live in the said city. In some cities, the ban is limited to hospitals, city halls, and government offices. If you visit the mall, most establishments still give away plastic bags to store the things you bought. If one store does not give you one, just go to the next establishment and they will surely give you a bag to store your things in.

So what is this plastic ban actually prohibiting? It prohibits the sale, distribution, and use of plastic bags as primary and secondary packaging materials for dry goods and as secondary packaging materials for wet goods. There are still some goods exempt from this which I will discuss below. It also bans the used of styrofoam (polystyrene) and other materials with non-biodegradable components that are being used for food, drinks, dining utensils and beverage containers.

Primary packaging materialsare the first level product packaging that contains the item being sold. I believe that this one applies to certain industries that produce local goods and wrap them in plastic packaging.

Secondary packaging materials, on the other hand, are the ones used to provide support for your goods with primary packaging. This category is the one plastic bags belong to, the ones that you get when you buy things from the grocery or department stores.

The products exempted from this ban includeplastic bottled products(e.g. bottled water, cooking oil, alcohol, peanut butter, etc.);plastic sachet products(e.g. shampoo, conditioner, noodles, cosmetics, etc.); and plastic bags used asprimary packaging on wet goodswiththickness of 15 microns above, and other similar products.

Debates have sparked between the two industries regarding their products. Philippine Plastic Industry Association (PPIA) say that making 1 paper bag cost more than 1 plastic bag in terms of the trees they need to cut, the amount of water used, and the amount of energy expended. Meanwhile, the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry of the Philippines issued a rebuttal to the arguments and said that all the paper products in the country are derived from recycled fiber, while plastic is made from petroleum, a dwindling natural resource.

While we get conflicting reports from these industries, these facts are stemmed by their need for the industry to survive by increasing their sales instead of actually offering a solution to the problem. For more details on just how much it costs to produce 1 plastic bag, visitAre We Saving Earth by Banning Plastic Bag?

In my opinion, dry goods are the easiest thing to find alternative packaging to plastic. Because there is no water involved, brown paper bags are a good storage solution. If you want handles, just bring your own sturdy bag/basket to store your items in. What the LGUs are promoting are bayongs. Bayongs are woven bags made from different kinds of leaves. This is traditionally used by people going to the wet market in the old days.

In some Asian countries I have visited, if you want the establishment to provide you a bag (paper/plastic), you have to pay a fee. So the people are encouraged to bring a big bag with them whenever they go out so they will not need to pay this fee when they buy things. These days, in municipalities where plastic bags are only regulated instead of totally banned, fees are also being charged for each bag.

Wet goods, on the other hand, are more problematic. Even if there is primary packaging surrounding your wet goods, there is a risk of liquid leaking and destroying bags made of paper. If you purchase different kinds of wet goods, you would not want to mix them together for fear of contaminating them. Imagine eating fish that tastes like meat, or fruit that stinks because of the fish smell.

One alternative is to bring your own things to wrap the wet goods in (e.g. old ice cream tubs, banana leaves, old newspapers, etc.) Then you can put those things in your bag/basket and be in no danger of mixing anything. Just note that if you do use recycled paper, make sure the product that you wrap is washable so no bacteria can contaminate it. You would not want to get sick just to save the planet.

Segregation of trash has been encouraged for a few years now. Its implementation, however, is still not perfect. I remember when I was in school, even though the trash cans are segregated, whenever the cleaning crew came, all the trash is piled into one single bin they roll around to collect the trash.

You can be more proactive and bring your trash to junk yards that buy recyclable materials for a small amount of money. As for the biodegradable trash, you can use it for your compost pile to put in your garden.

The problem with this is, how about those who live in condominiums? It is impossible to have zero plastic bags in local municipalities. How will you get rid of your biodegradable trash, when you dont have a garden to justify having a compost pile? Supposedly, there is a law for your biodegradable trash to be collected with no plastic bag. Just let the garbage collector empty out your containers and return them to your home. While we may throw our trash differently, here in our community, we leave the trash bags outside for the garbage collector to pick up. I do not want to leave anything of value outside for fear of losing anything to thieves.

One of the things we can do is wait until the plastic industry can produce biodegradable plastic locally before totally banning the petroleum-based plastic bags. Meanwhile, instead of just throwing the plastic bags that contain our trash, we can just empty out the bags and reuse them again if possible. This will reduce the amount of plastic we throw out, hence less problem with its non-biodegradability.

Critics have been arguing that plastic is not the only cause of flooding. Just because plastic floats on the surface doesnt mean it is the only problem we have. Items with higher densities sink and clog the drains directly. What we need is waste reduction. In order to actually reduce flooding, we need to change our mentality from just throwing things away to learning how to reuse our things.

In order to help out with this waste reduction, just bring your own bags so you can put in your purchases. When the establishment wants to give you a bag (whether plastic or paper), you can always tell them to just put the things in your bag instead. Just remember that if you dont start being more proactive in saving the environment, the next time heavy rains come, your house might not be so safe anymore.

What is the legal basis of the plastics ban?

The mayors of each municipality enforce the plastics ban.

Is it necessary to ban plastics in the Phillippines?

Yes. More plastic wastes have surfaced here in the Philippines during a recent typhoon, causing even more harm than just plain flood. Proper waste management along with total banning of plastics would help the environment a lot.

Is plastic allowed to be used in the Philippines?

Yes. You just need to pay extra in order to get them.

But in a North Dakota court lasOctober

Tap here to turn on desktop notifications to get the news sent straight to you.

Environmentalists Say Theyre Averting Climate Disaster. Conservatives Say Its Terrorism.

The post-9/11 rhetoric vilifying environmentalists is making a comeback.

Republicans are once again warning people about the threat of eco-terrorism.

Michael Foster, 53, is a mild-mannered mental health counselor and father of two from Seattle, with short-cropped silver hair and soft features.

But in a North Dakota court last October, prosecutors painted Foster as a ruthless killer and agent of chaos. The prosecution team compared him to the 9/11 hijackers who killed 2,996 people in the worst terror attack in history, and warned that he envisioned an anarchic future under Islamic religious law. Prosecutors even put him in a league with Ted Kaczynski, the so-called Unabomber whose 17-year bombing spree left three dead and injured 23.

Foster hadnt killed anyone. He didnt even injure anyone when, on Oct. 11, 2016, he put on a white hard hat and neon-yellow safety vest, grabbed some bolt cutters, and clipped the chain locking a fenced section of the Keystone Pipeline in Walhalla, North Dakota. Once inside the fence, Foster cranked a giant wheel-like valve until it closed, temporarily stopping the flow of tar sands oil.

In order to preserve life as we know it, and civilization, and give us a fair chance and our kids a fair chance, Im taking action as a citizen, Foster told another activist, Sam Jessup, wholive-streamedthe action. I am duty-bound.

Fosters action was part of a protest in solidarity with the indigenous activists fighting to stop construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, which runs through a sacred water source at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation on the other side of the state. Foster and Jessup did so in coordination with valve turners in four other states, timing their break-ins across the country to temporarily halt15 percent of U.S. oil consumption.

In October, a judgeconvictedFoster and Jessup of felonies  including criminal mischief and conspiracy to commit criminal mischief  carrying maximum sentences of 11 to 26 years in prison. Earlier this month, the judge sentenced Foster to three years in prison; Jessup received two years of probation. (Other valve turners have faced up to 10 years in prison and $20,000 in fines.)

They hit the trifecta: 9/11, the Unabomber, and that somehow our action was going to lead to Sharia law, said Emily Johnston, 51, who is set to stand trial in May for turning a pipeline valve in Minnesota. The theory being that if everyone just acted on what they believed in,m88明升洗浴 it would be anarchy.

That theory is now gaining some traction in Washington.

In October, 84 members of Congress, including four Democrats, sent Attorney General Jeff Sessions a letterurging him to find out whether the Department of Justice could prosecute pipeline saboteurs as terrorists. The Justice Department has yet to announce a decision, butsaid in Novemberthat it was committed to vigorously prosecuting those who damage this critical energy infrastructure in violation of federal law. Doing so would be a break from the Obama administrations decision to let states handle such cases, rather than treating them as federal crimes.

The purpose of this law isnt to wrap everybody up and send them to federal prison. Its to scare people, to create fear.

Will Potter, author of Green Is The New Red

But policymakers are sharpening their knives on the state level, too. Late last year, the conservative American Legislative Exchange Council drafted model legislation calling for severe punishments for anyone caught trespassing on or tampering with an oil, gas or chemical factory. The Critical Infrastructure Protection Act even includes a clause that any conspirator organization would be fined 10 times more than a trespasser, opening the door to crippling penalties for environmental groups.

Lawmakers inWyoming, Ohio and Iowaare now considering billsbased on the proposal. The Iowa bill is backed by Energy Transfer Partners, the company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline. In all, 31 states have considered 58 bills to crack down on protesters since November 2016, according to adatabasemaintained by the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law. Eight have been enacted, and 28 are pending.

At a moment when the Trump administration is waging all-out war on environmentalism, macheting away regulations and gearing up for a massive pipeline construction spree, eco-terrorism is re-emerging as a boogeyman in a way it hasnt since right after 9/11.

There are already laws in place to send environmentalists who tamper with fossil fuel infrastructure to jail, as Fosters case demonstrates. But if conservative lawmakers get their way, new laws could undermine the environmental movement just as scientists say thehumans are running out of timeto make the changes needed to stave off the worst effects of climate change.

Targeting environmentalists as domestic security threats goes back nearly two decades. Radical environmental groups experienced their heydays in the 1990s, but became victims of their own success as concerns over pollution and animal cruelty went mainstream.

But even as the influence of these groups waned, a scorched-earth crackdown loomed. President George W. Bush signed the USA Patriot Act in October 2001, just over a month after the 9/11 attacks. The law expanded the governments view of domestic terror suspects and granted law enforcement sweepingnew powersto investigate organizations and individuals, including by seizing assets without any prior hearing or criminal charges.

Its about installing fear so they dont go out and protest in the first place, said Will Potter, author of thebookGreen Is The New Red, while comparing ALECs recent bill to the actions taken after 9/11. The purpose of this law isnt to wrap everybody up and send them to federal prison. Its to scare people, to create fear.

Potter would know. In 2002, when he was a reporter working on the Chicago Tribunes metro desk, two FBI agents arrived at his home to question him about an animal rights protest he and his girlfriend had participated in months earlier. Both had been arrested and charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct after leaving flyers in a neighborhood where an insurance executive whose company covered animal laboratory testing lived. He says FBI agents, armed with new powers under the Patriot Act,threatened to add him to a domestic terror listif he didnt become an informant on the group with which he protested. The officersthreatened him, telling him they could make your life very difficult for you, having secured more authority now to get things done and get down to business after 9/11, Mother Jones reported in 2011.

Is this about just protecting some businesses? Or is this about this larger idea that the radical left is threatening America?

Cas Mudde, Dutch political scientist

In 2005, John Lewis, then the FBI official in charge of domestic terrorism,rankedeco-terrorism and animal-rights movement activists ahead of radical Islamic extremists as the nations top domestic terror threat.

The agency began investigating Eric McDavid, a self-declared green anarchist, that same year. In a now-infamous case, the FBI recruited a mole to get close to McDavid and coax him into plotting a C4 bomb attack. He was arrested in January 2006, andspent a decadein prison.

Congress also quietly passed the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act in 2005, a sweeping law that classified many forms of animal rights protest as terrorism. It was used toprosecute Lauren Gazzola, the U.S. coordinator for a campaign against an animal product testing, on six felony charges that included conspiracy to violate an earlier law meant to protect businesses from protestors.

The crackdown was at odds with any realistic threat these environmentalists might have posed. Less than 10 percent of all radical environmental and animal rights actions from 2003 to 2010 even included criminal activity, according to astudypublished in 2014 in the journal Studies in Conflict & Terrorism. Of those acts, 66 percent were vandalism, less than 15 percent were house visits, and just over 12 percent involved freeing animals from cages. About 4 percent were arsons, and 1.4 percent involved explosives. There were no assassinations.

Cas Mudde, a Dutch political scientist who co-authored the study on criminal activity amongst activists, points out that the attacks on environmentalists came at a time when many political protesters were speaking out against the Iraq War meaningenvironmentalists served as a sort of proxy for other left-leaning protest movements.

This is not unlike what were seeing now, Mudde said, noting that overlap between leftist activists and radical environmentalists makes it easy for conservatives to demonize both equally.

For example, Fox News hosts Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity spent months inveighing against theso-called antifa and alt left movements, terms they use to refer to certain anti-fascist protester groups that rose up in response to increasingly vocal white nationalists in the U.S. Researchers who study extremistssay alt left does notdescribe a real phenomenon.

Mudde said it could be especially telling to see how Republicans frame the laws to criminalize fossil fuel protest.

Is this about just protecting some businesses? he said. Or is this about this larger idea that the radical left is threatening America?

The surprise election of President Donald Trump in 2016 dashed any hopes that the so-called green scare was a thing of the past. Trump, who dismisses climate change and installed an EPA administrator who shares his ideological antagonism toward science, reversed regulations and announced plans to withdraw from the Paris climate accord.

The conditions primed the rise of a more militant environmental movement and for an even more militant crackdown.

In a provocative essay published in September inForeign Policy, think tank scholar Jamie Bartlett argued that formal, peaceful political activism that all-important route to redress isnt working to address pollution and that the signs of growing radicalism in green circles are already there, if you know where to look. He noted that hard-line environmental organizations are seeing a membership surge, and that local anti-fracking groups are growing faster than ever before.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has yet to make a final decision onwhetherhis Justice Department will prosecute pipeline saboteurs as terrorists.

In April, the Department of Homeland Security warned of attacks by eco-terrorists who believe violence is justified to stop the planned Diamond Pipeline from Oklahoma to Tennessee. But thereportadmitted that no current intelligence suggested any attack had actually been planned.

The oil and gas industry is fueling fears of impending eco-terrorist attacks. In October, the American Petroleum Institute disclosed that it was working with the Trump administration on this issue, including the DOJ, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, according to the trade publicationNatural Gas Intelligence. API indicated that its lobbyists met with the FBI and other agencies to discuss efforts related to pipeline security, according to its final-quarter disclosure report from 2017.

The ALEC model bill is perhaps the clearest indication that eco-terrorism is back as a boogeyman on the right. When ALEC began shopping the bill around to state legislatures, it included a letter signed by a consortium of fossil fuel corporations and chemical manufacturers urging lawmakers to introduce bills based on the legislation to curtail the growing and disturbing trend of environmentalists attacking infrastructure.

The letter, which HuffPost obtained, listed five examples to back up the trend. One was the valve turners case. The others did not actually involve environmentalists. Instead, they were loosely bound by common threads of mental illness or workplace grievance:

In August 2011, Daniel Wells Herriman heard voices in his head, whichconvinced himto plant a crude bomb near a gas pipeline in Oklahoma. He turned himself in, pleaded insanity, and wassentencedthe next year to more than five years in prison.

In June 2012 after spending months writing fawning prison letters to the Unabomber and posting enraged videos about having to pay taxes Anson Chidecided to live outhis fantasies by blowing up a homemade explosive near a natural gas pipeline in Plano, Texas. He was sentenced to20 yearsin prison.

Just after midnight on April 16, 2013, a sniper fired more than 100 rounds of .30-caliber rifle ammunition into the radiators of 17 electricity transformers in Metcalf, California. The attacker, believed to an insider who worked at the utility PG&E, was never found.

In October 2017, vandals believed to berecently furloughed employeesransacked a wastewater plant in Crow Agency, Montana, igniting a fire and firing off guns.

Marathon Petroleum Corporation, the only individual company to sign the letter, declined to comment. The Edison Electric Institute, a trade group for utilities, said, It is important for law enforcement agencies to have the ability to hold individuals and organizations accountable for any attempts to damage or sabotage critical infrastructure.

In a bizarre response, a spokesman for the Energy Policy Network denied that the coal-industry advocate signed the letter. He did not respond when sent screenshots and asked to comment on why the groups name appeared in the signature of the letter.

The American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers, a trade group, did not respond to questions about the examples listed in the letter, but defended its support for the ALEC legislation.

Our highest priority is the welfare of our employees, surrounding communities and the environment, and sabotage against critical infrastructure can put this safety at risk, Chet Thompson, the associations president and chief executive, told HuffPost by email. While AFPM defends peaceful protest, violence is never justified and cannot be condoned.

The American Chemistry Council and the American Gas Association trade associations for chemical manufacturers and gas-burning utilities did not respond to requests for comment. ALEC did not reply to an email requesting an interview.

While industry groups quietly work to lay sharper legal snares for environmentalists, people like Johnston, the woman who turned a pipeline valve in Minnesota, are fighting to reshape the narrative over fossil fuel sabotage in court.

In October, a district court judge in Minnesota ruled that Johnston and her two co-defendants would be allowed to argue that the necessity of confronting climate change justified temporarily shutting down the pipeline. Michael Gerrard, director of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University, called the defense extremely unusual, according toInsideClimate News. But, if successful, it could set a legal precedent used in the past by political activists on issues including the Vietnam War, nuclear weapons and abortion.

Either way, Johnston said she is prepared to make an example of herself.

Im not afraid to go to jail, she said. Im afraid of climate change.

Volume 112,15 December 2012, Pages 309-320

Does organic farming reduce environmental impacts? A meta-analysis of European research

Organic farming practices have been promoted as,inter alia, reducing the environmental impacts of agriculture. This meta-analysis systematically analyses published studies that compare environmental impacts of organic and conventional farming in Europe. The results show that organic farming practices generally have positive impacts on the environment per unit of area, but not necessarily per product unit. Organic farms tend to have higher soil organic matter content and lower nutrient losses (nitrogen leaching, nitrous oxide emissions and ammonia emissions) per unit of field area. However, ammonia emissions, nitrogen leaching and nitrous oxide emissions per product unit were higher from organic systems. Organic systems had lower energy requirements, but higher land use, eutrophication potential and acidification potential per product unit. The variation within the results across different studies was wide due to differences in the systems compared and research methods used. The only impacts that were found to differ significantly between the systems were soil organic matter content,m88明升桑拿 nitrogen leaching, nitrous oxide emissions per unit of field area, energy use and land use. Most of the studies that compared biodiversity in organic and conventional farming demonstrated lower environmental impacts from organic farming. The key challenges in conventional farming are to improve soil quality (by versatile crop rotations and additions of organic material), recycle nutrients and enhance and protect biodiversity. In organic farming, the main challenges are to improve the nutrient management and increase yields. In order to reduce the environmental impacts of farming in Europe, research efforts and policies should be targeted to developing farming systems that produce high yields with low negative environmental impacts drawing on techniques from both organic and conventional systems.

► On a per area basis organic farming, generally, has low environmental impacts. ► The benefits of organic farming are reduced when using product unit comparison. ► High levels of variation exist within both organic and conventional systems. ► Modelling studies tend to overestimate the benefits of organic farming. ► The relative impacts of the systems vary between different product groups.

A Question To Destroy All Mankind: Does A Straw Have One Hole Or Two?

A Question To Destroy All Mankind: Does A Straw Have One Hole Or Two?

Things got pretty tense on Twitter when users couldnt agree on what most might think is a simple question does a straw have one hole or two?

So far over 91,000 people have voted and/or commented on their take on the dilemma.

We had a riveting discussion about this at lunch, but I want to hear from all of you: Does a straw have one or two holes?

Jess Marfisi (@jessdrawz)January 26, 2018

But before you take a side on this very important issue facing us today, here are some compelling arguments:

straws have one hole. would you say a donut has 2 holes? no. a straw is just a long plastic donut. its not long enough to get away with having 2 holes. humans are long enough donuts to have 2 holes, humans even have several holes. straws are not human length

malin (@c0conutcoke)January 24, 2018

If you look at any plane perpendicular to the straw surface, cut a cross section, you have 1 hole. You can do that infinitely many times.

PHILtheMath (@JPhilJr)January 28, 2018

If you were to poke a hole in the middle, and blow water into it, you would be blowing water into one hole and it would be coming out of two holes, thus THREE HOLES, thus there are TWO HOLES ORIGINALLY!!!!m88明升夜生活

Come on guys, dont start that up again.

Basically, this is how the majority of us are feeling about it in 3 simple tweets:

its unclear exactly what Disney is planning to do with FoxsX-Menfranche

Subscribe To Fantastic Fours Box Office Bomb Contributed To Gambits Delays Updates

Before superhero movies were everywhere, 20th Century Fox and Bryan Singer broughtX-Mento theaters backin the year 2000. That franchise is still going strong today, withDark PhoenixandThe New Mutantsset to arrive in theaters, despite Foxs upcoming merger with Disney. But Fox has had some missteps along the way, including Josh Tranksalready infamousFantastic Fourmovie. The comic book adaptation was a critical and financial flop, barely recouping its budget while being panned by audiences and critics alike.

While Fox has let theDeadpoolfranchise flourish andcontinued the mainX-Menfranchise, there is a certain flick that has sat in development hell for years: Channing TatumsGambitmovie. The fan favorite characters solo movie has been pushed back a number of times, and the Fox/Disney merger makes its fate all the more precarious. Rupert Wyatt waspoised to directthe project at one point, but he recently revealed thatthe failureofThe Fantastic Fournegatively affected the films potential budget. As he put it:

I was very close with Channing Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin, and I was on the script with him and Josh Zetumer as a writer. We were close, I believe 10 weeks away. It simply came down to budget. There was not enough. You know all too well about the politics of the business.Fantastic Fourhad been released by Fox a month before and had not gone well for them,m88明升洗浴 so our budget was slashed quite considerably.

Superhero movies may be themost profitablegenre in the film world, but they also require the biggest budgets. As such, each new release is a major gamble.Fantastic Fourfailed to perform at the box office, so it seems Fox kept its purse strings a bit tighter, and didnt want to giveGambitthe same type of cash money. Poor Remy Lebeau.

Rupert Wyatts comments toComics Beathelp to illuminate the myriad delays that have hitGambitsince the potential blockbuster was announced. Channing Tatum has been signed to the project since May of 2014, so moviegoers have been waiting quite a bit of time for the fan favorite X-Man to reappear on the silver screen. Wyatt isnt the only director who has been attached to the project, as Doug Limanalso leftdue to script concerns. The scriptwas presumably being worked on, before the projects development was put officially on hold.

Its unclear if Disney has any interest in bringingGambitinto the MCU, with the House of Mouse expected to acquire the rival studio in a matter of weeks. This puts the fate ofGambitup in the air, as well aswhere/whenexactlyThe New Mutantswill be completed and released. This is a series of events the public has grown accustomed to, althoughThe Fantastic Foursaffect onGambits budgetis an interesting development in the potential films story.

Gambithas been delayed for years, with three different directors brought on, before eventually departing the ill-fated blockbuster. In addition to Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman,The Ringdirector Gore Verbinski was the most recent addition to the trio. Verbinski was set to direct Channing Tatum whenGambitwas going to get a December 14th, 2019 release date. The project would be somewhat romantic comedy inspired, andthe casting processhad even began before VerbinskidepartedGambitdue to scheduling and creative differences.

From there,Gambits fate remained unclear. The project got pushed back a number of times since then, although Channing Tatum seemed determined to play the New Orleans mutant one way or another. Most recently, reports indicatedTatum had interest in both directing and starring in the project. Unfortunately, the news stopped there, as Foxs potential projects were put on hold due to the companys impending merger with Disney.

Gambitmight never make it to theaters, which will no doubt be a point of contention with the rabid comic book fandom. Gambit became a household name due to the X-Men animated series, and his generations of fans are eager to see the card thrower on the big screen.

Of course, Gambit did appear in live-action once before, although its a memory the fandom is likely trying to forget. Taylor Kitschplayed Remy LeBeauinX-Men Origins: Wolverine, the first spinoff in theX-Menfranchise. While playing a supporting role and aligning with Hugh Jackmans Logan, the character (and movie) wasnt received well by the fans. As such, Channing Tatums possible movie offers a welcomed alternative to that characterization. If it ever makes it to theaters, that is.

Overall, its unclear exactly what Disney is planning to do with FoxsX-Menfranchise, once the merger is finalized at last. While the House of Mouse will likely let Ryan ReynoldsDeadpoolfranchise operate independently, the rest of the mutants likely wont fare the same. Comic fans are eager to see the X-Men finally appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although it seems unlikely that the same cast will be brought onto the payroll.Dark Phoenixhas the potentialto be the final installment in the long-running franchise, so potential projects likeGambitare probably the least of the studios concerns at the moment.

Still, a superhero movie starring Channing Tatum as a fan favorite hero seems like money in the bank, who Disney might end up getting yet another director and moving forward withGambit. Focusing on one X-Man at a time may help ease them into the MCU, rather than bringing an entire team of characters to an already crowded shared universe. At this point, its anyones guess.

Comic book fans are also hoping theFantastic Fourwill get their own reboot within the MCU, as thats another team that has been noticeably missing from the larger shared universe. But considering how recently Josh Tranks version was in theaters, it may take moviegoers more time to get the taste of that flop out of their mouths.

The next installment in FoxsX-Menfranchise will beDark Phoenixon June 7th, andGambits release date was last set on March 13th, 2020. Be sure to check out our2019 release listto plan your next trip to the movies.

FILE – In this March 16, 2016,m88明升夜生活 file photo, Mats Pettersson, of Sweden, mushes along the frozen Bering Sea coast outside Nome, Alaska. Far from competitors tackling the frozen wilderness in Alaskas Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, a dozen people are holed up inside an Anchorage hotel behind banks of computers, tracking the punishing route and connecting with global fans seeking a real-time link to the off-the-grid sport.

As of Friday, 51 mushers are traveling long stretches between remote village checkpoints with no other company but the dogs pulling their sleds. But theyre not competing in a vacuum on the 1,000-mile (1,600-kilometer) trail that spans two mountain ranges and the frozen Yukon River before it heads up the wind-scrubbed Bering Sea Coast to the finish line in the Gold Rush town of Nome.

Their progress is monitored from several hotel rooms whose 24/7 occupants are the Iditarods electronic eyes and ears. Technology has increasingly made the 47-year-old race more immediate to fans and safer for competitors, said Chas St. George, acting CEO of the Iditarod Trail Committee, the races governing board.

This is a really low-tech event when you look at it from that perspective, but high-tech research has always been a huge part of the race, he said Wednesday during a tour of the Iditarods hotel command post.

This is where volunteers and race contractors monitor the dog teams through sleds equipped with GPS trackers that allow fans to follow them online in real time and organizers to ensure no one is missing. Some serve as aircraft dispatchers for a cadre of pilots who ferry supplies as well as mushers and dogs that drop out.

Others process live video streamed from checkpoints along the rugged trail, using satellite dishes. Some volunteers handle race-standing updates sent through equipment first tested last year, making it possible to activate a super-size hot spot in the most remote places with satellite connections.

Long gone are the days where some race updates came through amateur radio and faxes, said Reece Roberts, a supervisor in the internal communications room who has been a race volunteer for 14 years.

Now we use satellite phones and we have satellite modems essentially for data transfers, he said. Its very slow, but it works.

In one room, Art Aldrich worked Wednesday in relative darkness, his face illuminated by his computer screen. He monitored a live video of two Iditarod pundits at the Nikolai checkpoint, 687 miles (1,100 kilometers) from the finish line on the races third day. Veteran musher Matt Failor appeared on the feed in real time.

Ladies and gentlemen, Matt Failor live from Nikolai, Iditarod Insider interviewer Greg Heister announced, asking how the race was going for him.

So far, so good, Failor said, grinning. Are we really live right now? He waved at the camera.

Aldrich also relays questions from live video chats to camera operators in the field. He said its not the most sophisticated system, but it gets the job done. The fans love it, he said.

The live chats, which are posted in the paid subscription platform Iditarod Insider, have attracted an online community from at least 164 countries, according to Mike Vann in the technology war-room.

Its pretty amazing when we start interacting with them to see where people are joining us from, he said.

This year, race organizers introduced Gia, a digital sled dog mascot with a squeaky voice that fans can chat with through Facebook messenger. Before the race, the cartoon dog even helped organizers recruit donations of straw used for dog beds at the checkpoints, Iditarod officials said.

Veteran musher Scott Janssen is sitting out the race, but like other fans, is following the action through the GPS-rigged sleds required of every participant. As a competitor, he sees the benefits of GPS tracking and the satellite phones that mushers can now carry for emergencies.

Such technological additions make him feel safer to a point.

But to be honest, I would say conservatively that 90 percent of mushers would prefer that we had nothing at all on our sleds, Janssen said, adding that the technology eliminates the remote aspect of the race. It takes some of the toughness away from it. And thats why were doing that race, is to prove we can do this on our own, completely.

Associated Press writer Mark Thiessen in Anchorage contributed to this report.

9 Strange, Scientific Excuses for Why Humans Havent Found Aliens Yet

One night about 60 years ago, physicist Enrico Fermi looked up into the sky and asked, Where is everybody?

Today,m88明升桑拿 scientists know that there aremillions, perhaps billions of planetsin the universe that could sustain life. So, in the long history of everything, why hasnt any of this life made it far enough into space to shake hands (or claws or tentacles) with humans? It could be that the universe is just too big to traverse.

It could be that the aliens are deliberately ignoring us. It could even be that every growing civilization is irrevocably doomed to destroy itself (something to look forward to, fellow Earthlings).

Or, it could be something much, much weirder. Like what, you ask? Here are nine strange answers that scientists have proposed forFermis paradox.

Credit: JPL-Caltech/SETI Institute/NASA

The aliens are hiding in underground oceans.

If humans hope to converse with ET, well need to have a few icebreakers handy. No, seriously alien life isprobably trapped in secret oceansburied deep inside frozen planets.

Subsurface oceans of liquid water slosh beneath multiple moons in our solar system and may be common throughout the Milky Way, astronomers say. NASA physicist Alan Stern thinks clandestine water worlds like these could provide a perfect stage for evolving life, even if inhospitable surface conditions plague those plants. Impacts and solar flares, and nearby supernovae, and what orbit youre in, and whether you have a magnetosphere, and whether theres a poisonous atmosphere  none of those things matter for life thats underground,Stern told .

Thats great for the aliens, but it also means well never be able to detect them just by glancing at their planets with a telescope. Can we expect them to contact us? Heck, Stern said these critters live so deep, we cant even expect them to know that theres a sky over their heads.

The aliens are imprisoned on super-Earths.

No, super-Earth is not Captain Planets dorky cousin. In astronomy, the term refers to a type of planet with a mass up to 10 times greater than Earths. Star surveys have turned up oodles of these worlds that could have the right conditions for liquid water. This means alien life could conceivably be evolving on super-Earths all over the universe.

Unfortunately, well probably never meet these aliens. According toa study published in April, a planet with 10 times Earths mass would also have an escape velocity 2.4 times greater than Earths and overcoming that pull could make rocket launches and space travel near impossible.

On more-massive planets, spaceflight would be exponentially more expensive, study author Michael Hippke, a researcher affiliated with the Sonneberg Observatory in Germany, previously told Live Science. Instead, [those aliens] would be to some extent arrested on their home planet.

Were looking in the wrong places (because all aliens are robots).

Humans invented the radio around 1900, built the first computer in 1945 and are now in the business of mass-producing handheld devices capable of making billions of calculations per second. Full-blown artificial intelligence may be right around the corner, and futurist Seth Shostak said thats reason enough to reframe our search for intelligent aliens. Simply put,we should be looking for machines, not little green men.

Any [alien] society that invents radio, so we can hear them, within a few centuries, theyve invented their successors, Shostak said at the Dent:Space conference in San Francisco in 2016. And I think thats important, because the successors are machines.

A truly advanced alien society may be completely populated by super-intelligent robots, Shostak said, and that should inform our search for aliens. Instead of focusing all our resources on finding other habitable planets, perhaps we should also look to places that would be more attractive to machines say, places with lots of energy, like the centers of galaxies. Were looking for analogues of ourselves, Shostak said, but I dont know that thats the majority of the intelligence in the universe.

Weve already found aliens (but are too distracted to realize it).

Thanks to pop culture, the word alien probably makes you envision a spooky humanoid with a big, bald head. Thats fine for Hollywood but these preconceived images of uld sabotage our search for alien life, a team of psychologists from Spain wrote earlier this year.

In a small study, the researchers asked 137 people to look at pictures of other planets and scan the images for signs of alien structures. Hidden among several of these images was a tiny man in a gorilla suit. As the participants hunted for what they imagined alien life to look like, only about 30 percent noticed the gorilla man.

In reality, aliens probably wont look anything like apes; they may not even be detectable by light and sound waves, the researchers wrote. So, what does this study show us? Basically, our own imagination and attention span limit our search for extraterrestrialsy. If we dont learn to broaden our frames of reference, we could miss the gorilla staring us in the face.

Humans will kill all the aliens (or already have).

The closer we get to finding aliens, the closer we get to destroying them. Thats one likely eventuality, anyway, said theoretical physicist Alexander Berezin.

Heres his thinking: Any civilization capable of exploring beyond its own solar system must be on a path of unrestricted growth and expansion. And as we know on Earth, that expansion often comes at the expense of smaller, in-the-way organisms. Berezin said this me-first mentality probably wouldnt end when alien life is finally encountered assuming we even notice it.

What if the first life that reaches interstellar-travel capability necessarily eradicates all competition to fuel its own expansion? Berezin wrote ina paper posted in Marchto the preprint journal . I am not suggesting that a highly developed civilization would consciously wipe out other life-forms. Most likely, they simply wont notice, the same way a construction crew demolishes an anthill to build real estate because they lack incentive to protect it. (Whether humans are the ants or the bulldozers in this scenario remains to be seen.)

The aliens triggered climate change (and died).

When a population burns through resources faster than its planet can provide them, catastrophe looms. We know this well enough fromthe ongoing climate-change crisishere on Earth. So, isnt it possible that an advanced, energy-guzzling alien society might run into the same issues?

According to astrophysicist Adam Frank, its not only possible but extremely likely. Earlier this year, Frank ran a series of mathematical models to simulatehow a hypothetical alien civilization might rise and fallas it increasingly converted its planets resources into energy. The bad news is that in three out of four scenarios, the society crumbled and most of the population died. Only when the society caught the problem early and immediately switched to sustainable energy did the civilization manage to survive. That means that, if aliens do exist, the odds are pretty high theyll destroy themselves before we ever meet them.

Across cosmic space and time, youre going to have winners who managed to see what was going on and figure out a path through it and losers, who just couldnt get their act together, and their civilization fell by the wayside, Frank said. The question is, which category do we want to be in?

The aliens couldnt evolve fast enough (and died).

File another excuse under the aliens are dead already category. The universe may be teeming with hospitable planets, but theres no guarantee theyll stay that way long enough for life to evolve. According to a2016 study from Australia National University, wet, rocky planets like Earth very unstable when they start their careers; if any alien life hopes to evolve and thrive on such a world, it has a very limited window (a few hundred million years) to get the ball rolling.

Between the early heat pulses, freezing, volatile content variation and runaway [greenhouse gases], maintaining life on an initially wet, rocky planet in the habitable zone may be like trying to ride a wild bull  most life falls off, the study authors wrote. Life may be rare in the universe not because it is difficult to get started, but because habitable environments are difficult to maintain during the first billion years.

The universe is expanding. Slowly but surely, galaxies are moving farther apart, with distant stars appearing dimmer to us, all thanks to the pull of amysterious, invisible substance that scientist call dark energy. Scientists speculate that within a few trillion years, dark energy will stretch the universe so much that Earthlings will no longer be able to see the light of any galaxies beyond our closest cosmic neighbors. Thats a scary thought: If we dont explore as much of the universe as possible before then, such investigations may be lost to us forever.

The stars become not only unobservable, but entirely inaccessible, Dan Hooper, an astrophysicist at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois, wrote in a studyearlier this year. That means were on a serious deadline to find and meet any aliens out there and to keep a step ahead of dark energy, well have to expand our civilization into as many galaxies as we can before they all drift away.

Of course, fueling that kind of growth wont be easy, Hooper said.It might involve rearranging the stars.

If you left your house today, you saw an alien. The woman delivering mail? Alien. Your next-door neighbor? Nosy alien. Your parents and siblings? Aliens, aliens,

At least, thats one implication of the fringe astrobiology theory called thepanspermia hypothesis. In a nutshell, the hypothesis says that much of the life we see on Earth today didnt originate here but was seeded here millions of years ago by meteors carrying bacteria from other worlds.

Proponents of this theory have variously suggested thatoctopi, tardigrades and humans were seeded herefrom other parts of the galaxy but unfortunately, theres no real evidence to back up any of that. One big counterargument: If bacteria carrying human DNA evolved on another nearby planet, why havent we found traces of humanity anywhere besides Earth? Even if this hypothesis turns out to be plausible, it still doesnt help us answer Fermis nagging question

According to areportfrom The College Fix, Clemson University Professor Todd May recently called for the end of human existence and has refused to defend his argument. May argued that humans do far more bad than good. What are humanitys worst crimes according to the professor? These include oppression of animals and destruction of the environment.

TheNew York Timescolumn, which was titled Would Human Extinction Be a Tragedy? was published in late December. In the column, May weighs humanitys positive contributions to the world against its negative contributions.

First, human contribution to climate change is devastating ecosystems, as the recentarticle on Yellowstone Parkin The Times exemplifies. Second, increasing human population is encroaching on ecosystems that would otherwise be intact. Third,m88明升桑拿 factory farming fosters the creation of millions upon millions of animals for whom it offers nothing but suffering and misery before slaughtering them in often barbaric ways. There is no reason to think that those practices are going to diminish any time soon. Quite the opposite. Humanity, then, is the source of devastation of the lives of conscious animals on a scale that is difficult to comprehend.

And then May hit his readers with his conclusion. It may well be, then, that the extinction of humanity would make the world better off and yet would be a tragedy. I dont want to say this for sure, since the issue is quite complex, May wrote. But it certainly seems a live possibility, and that by itself disturbs me.

Students at Clemson University have tried to reach out to May to speak about his column. May has refused to defend or comment on the piece since it was published.

OneNew York Timescommenter bashed May for his ultimate liberal fantasy perspective on humanity.

This is the ultimate liberal fantasy belief, that humans are bad because they are destroying the planet, and we dont deserve to survive, that weve ruined the beautiful peaceful earth, that the earth would be better without us, the commenter wrote. Such utter nonsense. We have changed the earth, mostly for the good, we are the first species to have that capability.
